If You Can’t Meditate, Read This
You’ve given it a try, maybe a few tries, and concluded that meditation is not for you. Your mind is just too active. Maybe crossword puzzles, running, or power naps count as meditation? Well, relaxing and even daydreaming are valuable, but meditation is different.
Over the years, I’ve heard a lot of reasons why people “can’t” meditate, and I can definitely relate. Not being able to meditate is part of the journey. In fact, the more difficult meditation is for you, the more transformative it will be.
Here’s the good news: You can forget about meditating and just breathe instead. Try this:
Sit down with a pillow behind your lower back so that your spine is straight. Relax your shoulders. Tell yourself to let this be easy and relaxed.
Breathing through the nose inhale to the slow count of four, then exhale for the same count of four. Use the count to keep the inhale and exhale the same length. Allow for the pause between the exhale and inhale. You’ll feel the natural pull of the inhale, try not to rush it. Stay with the breath, and remember to let this be easy.
Do this breathing exercise with the eyes closed for 2 minutes using your phone timer. You may want to add a minute so that you can find a rhythm. Do this twice a day and notice the results. Add time as you like but there’s no need to overdo it. And not to ruin it but, guess what, you’re meditating!
